John T Lehmann Well Known Man Taken By Death
John T Lehmann, well known resident of Watertown for many years, died at his home 1205 Main Street at 4 o'clock this morning [23 December 1924]. Mr. Lehmann had been in failing health since last spring but he had been able to be up and about. Saturday evening, he suffered a stroke of paralysis but seemed to have sufficiently recovered and there was hope for his complete recovery.
Mr. Lehmann was a native of Germany where he was born May 28, 1836. He came to this country with his parents in 1856. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. [Jacob] Traugott Lehmann and the family settled near Watertown.
Mr. Lehmann served his country during the Civil War. He enlisted with Company E, 20th Wisconsin Infantry on August 13, 1862, and he served until July 14, 1865, when he was honorably discharged. While in the service of his country, he took part in many battles among which were the following: Van Buren, AK [Arkansas]., Ft Morgan, AL [Alabama]., Spanish Fort, AL[Alabama], Vicksburg [Mississippi].
Following his discharge from the service, Mr. Lehmann returned to Watertown and on May 17, 1866 he was married to Mathilda Borchardt. She with three daughters and two sons survive. The children are Mrs. William Felton [Josephine] and Mrs. Henry Pitzner [Louise], this city, Mrs. John Mussehl [Lena] of Jefferson, Theodore Lehmann of Route 1 and John Lehmann of this city. There are also three sisters surviving as are 14 grand children and 9 great grandchildren.
Mr Lehmann was a member of the O.D. Pease Post of the G.A.R. A week ago, he took part in the funeral service of a brother comrade Col. A Solliday. He was also a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of this city.
Mr. Lehmann was a familiar figure in this community. He was well liked by everyone and was held in high regard by the people of this city. He was a staunch supporter of the principles sponsored by the G.A.R. and took part in all of its activities. In his passing, the community loses one of its old citizens and his death will be regretted by many.
The funeral will be held Friday afternoon [26 Dec 1924]. Services will be held at the home at 1:30 o"clock followed by services at 2 o"clock at the Immanuel Church. The Rev. K.J. Herbener will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.
