She was born Dec. 26, 1923, to William Columbus and JoAnn Wilson Grissom, in Cross Plains, Texas. She died March 31, 2005, in Coos Bay.
Maggie and Carl Nelson had been married for 66 years on Feb. 18. She loved her flower and vegetable garden. She also loved spending time with her family. Her family loved her so very much.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Nelson of Coos Bay; daughters and sons-in-law, Tom and Mary Lou Munyon of Coos Bay and Vern and Jean Borg of Coos Bay; son, Carl Dean Nelson of California; sister, Johnny Scuddy of Witter, Ark.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Her son, Grady Ray Nelson, was killed in Vietnam in 1968.

Carl and Maggie L. (Grissom) Nelson, of Coos Bay, will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Feb. 18.
The couple met and married Feb. 18, 1939, in Pioneer, Texas, with the Rev. Faulkner officiating. Witnesses were Maggie's brother, Bob Grissom, and Carl's sister, Sylvia Nelson.
They made their home in Cross Plains, Texas, where their first child, Mary Lou, was born; Jean was born in Rule, Texas; Carl Dean and Grady Ray were born in Memphis, Texas; and Burl Smith also was born.
Carl worked as a carpenter with Keith Waddell while they lived in Memphis. Maggie had a small hamburger and grocery store near Travis Elementary School.
After moving to Coos Bay in 1953, Carl worked for Coos Bay Lumber and, in 1977, retired from Georgia-Pacific. They then traveled in their motor home and fifth-wheel trailer for several years throughout the United States.
The couple are the parents of Mary Lou Munyon and her spouse, Thomas L., of Coos Bay; Jean Borg and her spouse, Vern, of Coos Bay; Carl Dean, of California, and Grady Ray, who was killed in Vietnam. They also have 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
