OBITUARY Iron River Reporter Dec 30 1948 "Fred Hartley, Pioneer Here, Is Dead At 82"
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Fred Hartley, 82, an Iron River pioneer, who died on Christmas Eve.
Rev. Stuart Werner, First Presbyterian pastor, officiated at the rites held in the Johns chapel, and interment followed in Resthaven cemetery vault.
In fair health until recently, Mr. Hartley had suffered a stroke on Dec. 14 and was taken to the Iron county infirmary. He died there at 4:30 p.m. Friday of pneumonia.
He was born in Simcoe, Ontario on July 26, 1868. Married in Simcoe, Mr. and Mrs. Hartley came to Iron River in 1893 and Mr. Hartley conducted a merchant tailoring establishment in the Saigh building on Genesee street for 23 years, retiring from that in 1916 to move to the Hartley farm at Iron lake. Mrs. Hartley died in June, 1947.
Mr. Hartley was active in public affairs of the Iron River area when the city was a village and part of Iron River township. He served as a member of the township board and as township clerk and was a school board trustee for some years. He also was a musician in the early bands of the vicinity.
Pallbearers at the services Monday were Charles Wunder, Richard Carne, Hans Larson, Joseph Brown, Robert Barnum and Calvin Windsor, all friends for many years.
Mr. Hartley, who was a former member of the Eagles and Knights of Pythias, is survived by five children, 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He leaves three sons, Andrew of Ironwood, Larry and Russell of Iron River, and two daughters, Mrs. Vera McNulty, Chicago, and Mrs. Eloise Anderson, Lincoln avenue, Stambaugh. A daughter Marjorie died at the age of two years.

YEARBOOK Iron River High School 1917 lists him as Trustee on the Board of Education.

OBITUARY of Mary Hartley 1947 says she married Mr Hartley in Buffalo NY in 1892 and they moved to Iron River in Sep 1893. Mr Hartley conducted a tailoring shop here for 23 years and in 1918 the family moved to a farm near Iron lake.
