Brunsting graduated from Central College. He served in the Armed forces as a bomber pilot during World War II. He was chaplain to the American and British embassies in Moscow during the Stalin regime. He was a close associate of Norman Vincent Peale, preached at Peale's New York City Church and taught at the Peale School for Preachers. He was president of the Dutch Reformed Church. Brunsting was pastor emeritus of Mariner Sands Chapel, where he became its first minister in 1987. He preached and taught around the world by invitation. His sermons were published in "Plus Magazine" and he wrote six books of humor, including "The Ultimate Guide to good Clean Humor." He enjoyed golfing.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Alice Nixon Brunsting; a son, Al Brunsting and wife Joyce of Naperville, Illinois; three daughters, Bernace De Young of Aventura, Florida, Carol Brunsting of Stuart and Dorothy and husband Mike Bishop of Shawnee, Kansas; five grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Danny, in 1959.
