A 65-year-old missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Ivory Coast Abidjan Mission was killed Saturday in her apartment during an apparent robbery attempt, church officials said.
Sister Adele Atchley, a senior missionary from Santa Monica, Calif., was serving a mission with her husband in the town of Yamoussoukro, according to church spokesman Dale Bills.
Local authorities and the U.S. Embassy are investigating the crime.
Sister Atchley had been a missionary for five months. Her husband was away from the apartment when the crime was committed.
There are more than 5,400 church members in the Ivory Coast. The first missionaries arrived in the country in 1988, and the mission was officially created in 1993. The first stake there was formed in 1997.
Atchley is the second LDS missionary to die from a violent crime in the same mission in West Africa. Elder Jonathan Philip Barrett, 19, of Morgan, was stabbed in the chest by a lone man without provocation on April 24, 1999. (Published: Deseret News, Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002)
