Sylvester Gutshall, 27, son of Daniel & Elizabeth Gutshall, and Alveretta J. Shatto, 17, daughter of John & Susan E. Shatto, were married December 22, 1885 at the home of the brides parents. Both state no previous marriages. (Source: Perry County, PA Marriage Records)

Sylvester was the last of twelve known children in his family. He father was a weaver and farmer in Toboyne Township, Perry County.
Upon marriage Sylvester and Rettie lived in her parents' home. He was a laborer and farmer, according to family accounts. After the death of Rettie, he lived with his daughter Goldie and son-in-law, James Leach where he is found an aged retiree surrounded with family and many grandchildren.
