Abbott attended the University of Nebraska and worked for the World-Herald in various capacities from 1903 until his retirement in 1935, when he decided to devote full time to fiction writing. His most famous work was, "Tree of Life."
At the time of his death, he was working on a sequel to a recently completed novel and it was believed that overwork attributed to his illness.
Before coming to Omaha, he worked for a time on the old Fremont Herald, was a tutor in English at the University of Iowa and publisher, along with a brother, of the Lariat, a newspaper at Lawton, Oklahoma.
Surviving are his widow, Mabel Avery Rundell, also a writer; a brother, N.C. Abbott, superintendent of the state school for the blind at Nebraska City; and a sister, Miss O.M. Abbott of California.
Funeral rites will be held Monday.
