PFC Rittenberry was a member of the 330th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Division, during World War II. He was killed in action in Normandy as the regiment was slowly advancing against "stubborn resistance" an area a few miles southwest of Carenten, France. He married Birdie (Taylor) Butler on February 5, 1944 in Hardin County. He was 37 and she was 28.
