Gabe proudly served our country during World War II and received a purple heart. He graduated from Waterville High School and attended St. Paul's School in Long Island, New York, on a scholarship. He majored in physics and economics at Colby College and received his master's degree from New York University. He enjoyed athletics and played varsity sports both in high school and in college.
He was employed for over 30 years at the Irving Tannery in Hartland. He served as chairman of the school board for SAD 53 and for Maine Central Institute. He also served on the board for Sebasticook Valley Hospital. He faithfully served God, his family, his country and his community.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Zanie Hikel of Pittsfield; his two children, Duska Hikel of Pittsfield and John Hikel of Goffstown, New Hampshire; his three grandchildren, Hunter Fitts and his wife, Nicole, Travis Fitts and his companion, Rayna, and Corey Fitts; his great grandchildren, Dillon, Madison, Braydon, Aliah and Alivia; and his two brothers, Rudolph Hikel of Orono and Adam Hikel and his wife, Rita, of Vassalboro.
He was predeceased by his sister, Katherine Fedick and two brothers, Joseph Hikel and Alexander Hikel.
A committal will be at the St Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, in Waterville, where military honors will be presented for his service to our country. (Morning Sentinel 8/8/2011)
