PITTSFIELD - Zanie Nawfel Hikel, 94, died peacefully, Saturday, August 27, 2016, in Pittsfield. Zanie was born on Oct. 14, 1921, in Waterville, the daughter of Sam and Adma (Daghir) Nawfel. She graduated from Waterville High School and received her degree from Thomas College and the University of Maine.

In her early years, she was employed as a secretary for the Department of the Navy in Washington, DC, working for Admiral Nimitz. She later worked on the military base in Bangor and also taught at Maine Central Institute for over 20 years.

Zanie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved cooking and could make an amazing meal in less than an hour. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and teaching. She was a member of the ARTS Club and Ladies Guild and a communicant of St. Agnes Catholic Church.

She is survived by her two children, Duska Hikel of Pittsfield and John Hikel and companion, Elaine Paradis, of Goffstown, N.H.; three grandchildren, Hunter Fitts and his wife, Nicole, Travis Fitts and Corey Fitts; five great-grandchildren, Dillon, Madison, Braydon, Aliah, Alivia and Travis Gabriel; brother, Dr. Michael Nawfel and wife, Dolores, of Waterville, and sister, Najla Joseph and husband, Harold, of Fairfield.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Gabriel Hikel in 2011, and two sisters, Laura Nawfel and Amera Nawfel.

A committal will be at the St. Francis Cemetery, Grove Street, in Waterville. Care for the family has been provided by Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, Pittsfield.
