Thomas Young (1802-1845); Ben Hill county, Georgia. Thomas Young was born in Jefferson County, GA (on) 11 May 1802, a son of George and grandson of Jacob Young, Revolutionary soldier. He grew up and married in Jefferson County, and moved to Irwin County about 1825 where he settled in the 4th District (present Ben Hill county) and lived there until his death. His wife was Mary Beaty, born in Jefferson County, daughter of Henry Beaty, an Irish emigrant. She was born about 1805 and died in Irwin County (on) 07 April 1879. To Thomas and Mary were born:

2 Margaret b. 20 August 1826, m. Archibald McMillan, 19 December 1839.
3 Rebecca b. 28 December 1827, m. John Hill (on) 18 February 1847, Telfair County.
4 Abbie b. 01 February 1829, m. John Vickers (on) 20 November 1845.
5 Nancy b. 18 April 1830, m. G.J.M. (Jacob) Harper (on) 21 January 1847.
6 George b. 04 January 1832, m. Mary Cooper (on 10 November 1855, dau. of Robert.
7 Mary b. 17 October 1833, never m., died November 1850.

Mr. Young was a prominent citizen of his county in his day, and served as Representative 1831-'37, and as State Senator 1840-'41. He was also Justice of Peace in the 432nd District, 1829-'31. His home place was on the present Fitzgerald-Broxton public road. In an altercation with James Hall, Thomas Young was killed December 1845. Hall was indicted for murder and his trial was postponed from term to term for various reasons until the October Term 1855, when he was tried and convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to four years in the penitentiary. The oldest son, Jacob Young (who later became a vaery prominent Primitive Baptist preacher) was appointed administrator of his father's estate, September Term, 1846. An inventory of the estate showed eleven slaves and 300 head of cattle among other property. Thomas and Mary Young are buried in the Young Cemetery near the head of Dorminy's Mill Creek, in Ben Hill County (GA). Source: Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia by Folks Huxford, Vol. 1, p. 303-304.
