County Employees Uncover Graves Near Courthouse

Ironically, on the Eve of Halloween, three tombstones and an epitaph were uncovered within a block of the city square by courthouse custodians. While cutting away the shrubbery and installing a cement foundation for new steps at the entrance of the County School Board office, 227 W. Fifth St, late Monday, Gerald Graves, Frank Peterman and Marvin Coomer dug up the flat surfaced markers unscathed by time except for several chipped corners. These earlier settlers of the village of Marysville have slept unnoticed for nearly 190 years probably because either there was no cemetery in the area or it was their wish to be buried on the premises of their home. The inscriptions revealed the stones marked the graves of Dr. Ira Wood, 40, who died Sept 7, 1839; his daughter, Isabel who died in 1832 and Uriah Wood, five-year old son of Ira and Margaret Wood who died in 1836. The fourth stone was clearly legible with this inscription: He lingers not within this smoldering cell He walks in beauty where all brows are pearled And round him within starry radiance dwell, the angel armies of that edeo world Whose hills forever lift then light and bloom Beyond the long dark journey of the tomb.
