Religious Leader. One of the leaders of the mid-18th Century "Great Awakening" religious movement, he played a prominent role while an itinerant Presbyterian evangelical preacher. He and other ministers such as George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards spread a message filled with fiery imagery of a wrathful God who would punish humans who had slid toward a perceived level of corruption and lessened piety that had waned since the days of the Puritans. The ministers' preaching enacted a profound effect on the American Colonists of the time, and has been deemed by historians to be the first movement to unite the loosely aligned 13 Colonies. Gilbert Tennent was instrumental in the founding of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), and the building of Nassau Hall.
