Funeral services will be held Tuesday for John Mathews Martin, 76, grandfather of New York Yankee second baseman Billy Martin, who died Friday at a local hospital.
Mr. Martin, who lived at 1165 Seminary Avenue, was born in the Azores Islands and was taken to Hawaii when he was a child. For many years he was a foreman of a sugar plantation. He and his wife, Maria, had lived in Oakland for over 30 years.
Besides his widow, Mr. Martin is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Gloria Garcia, Mrs. Angelina Alves, Mrs. Irma Souza and Mrs. Mabel Durand, and by five sons, John Jr., Alfred, Ernest, George and Melvin. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the C. P. Bannon Mortuary, 6800 East 14th Street, followed by a Requiem Mass at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 23rd Avenue and East Ninth Street. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
