Alfred Manuel Martin, 79, father of the Oakland A's fiery manager Billy Martin, died yesterday after a long illness.
Although Billy, who is under a week's suspension said he and his father were never close, associates of the A's field manager said he was noticeably shaken when he learned of the death of senior Martin in Alameda Sunday.
At the Toronto airport with his team leaving for Chicago, he did not know if he would attend the funeral.
The elder Martin drifted from the family when Billy was a child and the two reportedly rarely spoke. Billy's stepmother, Eva, said the two had met last July for the first time in a while at a birthday party for a great granddaughter.
She said Billy's father was a great A's fan and always proud of Billy, not just because of his success, but because he was his son. The elder Martin and his second wife were married for years and lived in Oakland; they had no children.
