Alfred Austell was a Brigadier-General in the Georgia State Militia during the Civil War. Though he was successful and wealthy before the war, his businesses were ruined at the close of the conflict. General Austell rebuilt his fortune and went on to found the Atlanta National Bank (successor to Wachovia Bank) and was a director of the Western & Atlantic Railroad. The city of Austell, GA is named for him.
