Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was also known as John Shields, and was buried under the name of John Spiel. He served in the Union Army as a Sergeant. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Corporal in Company E, 90th Pennsylvania Infantry of action on December 1862 at Fredericksburg, Virginia. His citation reads, "Carried a dangerously wounded comrade into the Union lines, thereby preventing his capture by the enemy."
