In addition to burials for John, his first wife Rachel, and his second wife Margaret, still to be found are burials for:
Mary - Rumored to be a daughter of Rachel and John
George Washington Housel (1833-1863) of Lock Haven, Clinton Co, PA
Hannah Marie (HOUSEL) Fenderson (1840 - 1898) of Williamsport, Lycoming Co, PA. Sister in law of Josephine (FENDERSON) Housel who married Hannah's brother William Housel listed below.
Mary Housel - who is listed in the 1870 census with Margaret and family, but does not show in the 1860 census (and therefore may be a cousin?).

I have listed John's birth year here as 1795, but it is likely that the family notes showing his birth as February 13, 1796 are correct despite the 1850 and 1860 census information which indicate 1795 and 1800 respectively.

By a family story, John is said to have fallen through the ice at the mill pond and drown on his 91st birthday. That date would be February 13, 1887. THIS INFORMATION SEEMS TO BE IN CONFLICT with the fact that he is no longer listed with wife Margaret and children in the 1870 census. A family story about John says that he took a third wife, and with her, had at least two more children. I have been able to find no record to support any of this latest claim about a third wife. We currently believe it to be a misunderstanding.

Noted in the 1880 census is the presence of a John Housel (said to be John M. Housel, which adds a number of variables and confusion), living as an 84 year old 'Brother-in-law' of a 60 year old widowed Delorah B. Miller and a 76 year old Elizabeth H. Housel who is somehow Delorah's sister-in-law. This is probably an entirely different John Housel (likely THE John M. Housel), but I haven't been able to trace the Miller family record.

One scenario has John being the son of Jacob Housel, grandson of Martin, who came early to the 'Buffalo Valley' of what is now Union County. It is definitely THIS John who is listed at Chillisquaque, Northumberland, PA in the 1850 census. I believe it is also this same John who is listed at Chillisquaque, Northumberland, PA in the 1830 and 1840 census. However, a different John is listed at Chillisquaque in the 1820 Census and before. Because of the attached image of his taylor shop opening in Milton in October 1817, and because we know that he was referred to as "Mr. John Housel, taylor of Milton" in a published announcement of his marriage to Margaret Giles of Liberty Township, we are confident that the John Housel listed in the 1820 US Census at Milton, Northumberland, PA, is this John Housel. By the 1860 census, he and his family move to Clinton County, PA where they appear in the census at Mill Hall.
