Funeral services for Hiram Moffitt, 81, pioneer Elwood resident and civil war veteran, who died at his home at 1506 North C street, shortly after 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, will be conducted at the East Main Christian church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. Polly Couch Bowman and the burial will be in the city cemetery.
Mr. Moffitt had been an invalid for the past eight years following a stroke of paralysis. He was born in Fayette county, Indiana, June 6, 1845, removed to Rush county and came to Tipton county fifty-two years ago. The remainder of his life has been spent in this community and he was a kindly old gentleman, enjoying the regard of all who knew him.
He was married at Cincinnati to Miss Cornelia Stangle in 1870, and five children were born to their union, of whom five survive, Andrew Moffitt, of Kennard, Ind.,
Mrs. D.T. Yarling, of Argos, Ind., Miss Goldie Moffitt at home, and Gus Moffitt, of this city. His wife died about twenty-five years ago.
Mr. Moffitt many years ago affilliated with the Baptist hurch. He was a good citizen and good soldier and many friends sincerely regret to learn of his death. (Elwood Call Leader, April 27, 1926.)
Mr. Moffitt was a veteran of the Civil War. He wnlisted in Company D, 139th Indiana Volunteer Infantry as a Private on May 4, 1862 and was discharged on September 29, 1864.
