MARY VIRGINIA (LEEDY) SMITH SHUMWAY

Mary Virginia Leedy was born at Morrisinville [Morrisonville], Illinois April 5, 1878 and passed away January 14, 1969 at the Wray hospital at the age of 90 years, nine months, and four days.

She was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Burns Leedy. At the age of seven the family moved to Kansas where she grew to maturity. she enrolled at Baker University in 1903, an unusual privilege for a young woman of her day.

On July 3, 1911, she was united in marriage to John H. Smith at Denver. The couple came as pioneers and established their new home in this area.

Three children were born to this union, Robert Conrad Smith, Yuma, Catherine of Medford, Oregon, and Margaret Juliet. After 17 years of marriage, her husband died.

She was married in June 1939 to Fred Almon Shumway, whom she met in Florida. They made their home in Massachusetts for 18 years.

She was an active member and worker in the Yuma Methodist Church in the early years of this community, also later of the Golden Age Club, and in the East, was a member of the Williamsburg, Massachusetts Historical Society of thye Congregational Church.

Her survivors include her son, Robert Smith; daughter, Mrs. Catherine Gandt; two brothers, Frank Leedy of Winter Park, Florida, and Gene Leedy of Neoscho Falls, Kansas; a sister, Edna Grantham of Pasadena, Californmia; two step-sons, James Smith of Yuma and Patrick Michael Smit of Haigler, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Richard and Roy Smith of Yuma, Ralph Smith of Durham, North Carolina, Mrs. Johyn Rowell, Mrs. Paul Eelkema of Buena Park, California, and Caroline Gandt of Eugene, Oregon.
