When a boy ten years of age he came with his parents to New York where he resided for some years. While in New York he was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Stephenson on Oct. 15, 1853.
To this union were born twelve children: Samuel Arthur, deceased May 20,1903, Thomas of Apple River, William of Dows, Iowa, Mrs. Alice Poyzer of Dows, Iowa, John H. of Rockford, George of Apple River, Katie, deceased May 17, 1912, Minnie, deceased Feb. 1872, Mrs. Maggie Wing of Warren, Ill., Wesley A., Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. Eva Schoenhard, Scales Mound, Melvin G. of Rockford.
After living in New York, a number of years, he with his family moved to New Diggings, Wisconsin in 1856, where he followed the occupation of mining. Later he purchased a farm in Apple River Township where he lived for 37 years and then sold out and moved to the village of Scales Mound, where he resided until the death of Mrs. McFadden which occurred on August 5th, 1912.
Since her death he has made his home with his youngest daughter, Mrs. George C. Schoenhard, where he passed away on July 19, 1921, at the age of eighty-seven years and five days. To mourn his death, he leaves nine children and sixteen grandchildren.
The family were Presbyterians and the father was a member of that church at Scales Mound at the time of his death.
To attend his funeral from a distance were Mrs. R.J. Poyzer, Dows, Ia., John and Melvin of Rockford, Mr. Boyle and daughter of Chicago, Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Hall of Jasper Co., Illinois.
The pallbearers were Harve Carr, Lemuel Stephenson, James Russell, Edward White, Chester White and Elmer McFadden. Rev. Sinning preached the funeral sermon which was very appropriate and Rev. Joscelyn made a specially touching prayer after which the remains were followed to the cemetery by a host of friends.
Mr. McFadden was of a very quiet disposition and a great lover of children and will be greatly missed at the Schoenhard home.
The family wish to extend their hearty thanks for the very kind attention rendered by the friends during deceased illness and at his death and for the profuse gifts of floral beauty which more than covered the casket.
