William Andrew Haun was born in Platte County, Missouri on June 5, 1848 to Zimiriah "Zimry" Haun and Elizabeth Whisman, he was their first child. He is the grandson of John Wilson Whisman, who operated the first stage couch line in California. His family came to California when he was just a toddler and he was raised in Gilroy. He married Ida Ann Forsting on July 4, 1888 in Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo County, California where they also made their home.

William and Ida had three children. Nancy Elizabeth Haun Burns was born in June 1889, Ida Mae Haun Berry was born in November of 1890 and Louis Zimiriah Haun was born in June of 1893.
