James was born in Beckwith Twp, Ontario, on 24 May 1841 to Patrick Brennan and Mary Ann Jordan. He was baptised on 15 Aug 1841 by Father McDonagh at St. John the Baptist RC Church in Perth. The Brennans moved to Grey Co before the 1852 census.

In the 1860s James immigrated to California, working for William A. Teague in Contra Costa County and married Teresa McAvoy. They had daughter Mary Anna, son John Joseph, and an unnamed child before Teresa's death in 1875.

In the 1870s James was joined by his brothers John and Ed. He and John ran a saloon, while Ed ran a livery stable next door. The brothers rented the Tierney ranch home on San Pablo just north of University. Their original saloon was at University and 2nd. After a fire destroyed the buildings in 1883, they rebuilt at University and San Pablo.

In 1883 James married Alice Mellon and they had sons Edward James, Joseph Patrick, and James Joseph.

In 1890 James developed blood poisoning and died after several weeks illness
