1st Lieutenant, Company I, 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Mustered in as Sergeant on October 30, 1862. Promoted to 1st Sergeant on September 1, 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on December 16, 1864 after Lt. Gardner was promoted to Captain. At war's end, the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry and the 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry were consolidated to form the 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry. Mustered out as 1st Lieutenant, Company F, 3rd Provisional Cavalry on October 31, 1865. Also listed as Forsman.

Lived in Foresman, Pennsylvania, after the war. After the war he engaged in farming in Loyalsock Township, and moved to Williamsport in 1867 and entered the butchering business. He was also employed in the lumber mills of the city at various times. Filed for a pension on February 9, 1899, application number 1,218,869, certificate 982,648. Wife Emily M. Foresman filed for a widow's pension on October 7, 1911, application number 973,023, certificate number 732,990.
