Joseph C. Thompson
Died near Corydon at his residence Tuesday morning Nov. 14, 1893 age 79 years, 2 months and 12 days. Deceased was born Sept. 2d, 1814 in Clarion Co., Penn. He lived in his native county until manhood and spent his youthful days on a farm. At the age of 22 years he married Nancy Fulton, they journeyed together almost 50 years, she preceding him to the Spirit land some 8 years. Sometime after their marriage they journeyed to Jefferson Co. of their native state, remaining there until 1855, moving to Birmingham, Iowa, in 1856 they came to Wayne Co, settling near Corydon and remained there until called to a better home.
Eleven children were born to father and mother Thompson, six still living. Sarah A. wife of M. Nelson, Jane, wife of Julius Greenlee, Edith E. widow of R. F. Detrick, John K. and Chas C. all of Wayne Co. All the children except Perry who lives in Garnett, Kansas were present at the deathbed of their aged father.
Some fourty years ago father Thompson was badly hurt by his team running away, ever since he has been suffering more or less from the effects of it, at times he was so afflicted that he was not able to walk for months at a time without the aid of crutches, sometimes not even able to leave his bed, his last sickness was of short duration but suffering the most escuciating pain he bore it all with Christian fortitude until relieved by death.
Deceased was reared by Christian parents and early in life became connected with the church of his father and was brought up strickly a Presbyterian lived in the faith, died in the faith, leaving a good record. The subject of religion was his favorite theme no one can say but what father Thompson was a good man.
Funeral services were held in the Baptist Church of Corydon. Funeral discourse delivered by Rev. Allen of the M. E. Church from 23rd Psalm, 4th verse "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me. Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me."
He was buried in the Corydon Cemetery by the side of his companion, there to remain until the trumpet of God will awake the dead. Since the death of mother Thompson he has made his home with his son, Chas C. on the old homestead. In the death of father Thompson the children loose an affectionate father and the community a friend and neighbor.
