He died of a stroke at age 80. An extract from his obituary in the Hickory Daily Record follows:
"Frank Clay Houck, 80, one of the oldest citizens in Hickory from oint of residence, died suddenly this morning at his home on Twelfth avenue from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Houck was well known throughout this section and owned considerable real estate in Hickory.
"Mr. Houck came to Hickory about fifty years ago when it was still a small village, and saw it grow from a few scattered houses into a fair sized city. He invested in real estate holdings and amassed considerable property."
Funeral services were held at his home.
