Robert Caldwell Houck was the son of Leander Houck and Anna Catherine Link Houck. He married Margaret Isabell Hood. Their children were: Edward Columbus "Tom" Houck, George W.; Horace Benedict "Dick; Grover Cleveland; Robert A., and Vanburen S., Elam Bertsie, Florence Fay, Bellona Caldwell "Dink", and Clara Ann.

Bob Houck served with the 72nd Regiment, Company C, of the Confederate States of America. He was a brick mason and also served as a county surveyor for Caldwell County for a number of years.

He died of mouth cancer at age 89.
