She's buried next to her husband, William Casper Aaker. They had two daughters born in Dallas Co, TX: Linda Lee and Janet Sue.∼Edna Marcella Lee ``Pinky' Aaker was born June 18, 1922, in Ossian, Iowa, a daughter of Alfred P. Lee and Mabel C. Lee. She died on April 3 2004 in Dallas, Texas.
Pinky's lifelong passion for teaching began in a one-room school house where, as the youngest of ten students, her desk was the teacher's lap. At Luther College she earned a BA in English with a minor in Music. While at Luther she met her future husband of 42 years, William C. "Bill" Aaker (1921-1989). She and Bill had three daughters Linda, Cathy, and Janet.
After college Pinky taught high school English and music, and coached women's basketball teams in small towns in Minnesota. She taught special education for over 40 years at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Weekday School. Some of her students were still calling at the time of her death to thank her for the love she gave them and the confidence she inspired in them. She enriched the lives of all the children that she taught, including her own.
Traveling the world with her daughters was one of Pinky's favorite adventures. With Linda she hiked into volcanoes in Guatemala and trekked the Himalayas. With Cathy she explored England, Scotland and Ireland. With Janet she snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and partied in Bali. But with all of them she traveled a life filled with absolute clarity of purpose: she was God's child and her goal was to get her three girls to heaven.
A charter member of King of Glory Lutheran Church, Pinky had been choir director, organist, Sunday school teacher, and senior citizen extraordinaire. Last year she was still mentoring at-risk children through her church.
Pinky was a person small of stature with an enormous heart and a true independent spirit. She laughed, worked, and played joyfully with her family, friends, and colleagues. At 8l she walked three miles just last week and joined a weight class three months ago.
An avid gardener, she left freshly picked radishes in her sink just yesterday. Everything she touched grew. Vegetables got larger, flowers more fragrant; children grew with confidence, and somehow people everywhere became better persons because of her gentle wisdom.
She loved life and lived it fully. And she never gave up on anyone. Pinky came a long way from a farm in Iowa. And we know exactly where she is today. She is fine in heaven but we miss her so.
Pinky's hymn, "Cradle Song," won a national contest and was printed on the cover of The Lutheran Standard.
