Josephine Mary Pedro was born in Milpitas California, the older daughter of Azorean immigrants Joseph Enos Pedro and Maria Faustina Silva. Her parents divorced around 1900 and she moved to Seattle with her mother and stepfather. In 1910 she married Clarence Melvin Thomas. The two settled in the Greenwood district of Seattle where they raised their seven children. Josephine maintained a connection to her California family, visiting several times. She was a talented seamstress who supplemented the family income with her business “The Apron Nook.”
