CHAPTER X
1940-1949
Last Confederate Veteran

Henry F. Pearson, who had been for some years Bamberg County's only surviving Confederate veteran, passed away October 9, 1940, at the age of ninety-three years. He was born November 20, 1847 and married the former Annie Catherine Smoak of Bamberg County, where they lived on lands inherited from her father's estate near U. S. Highway 601 south of Bamberg.
They were the parents of three Children: John Henry, who married Rebecca Mitchell; Ben F. Pearson, a bachelor; and Emma, who married first a Mr. Zeigler from Ehrhardt and after his death Carey Smoak. Emma Pearson and Carey Smoak were the parents of the following Bamberg residents: Elberta Smoak, who married Ernest Brickle: Cecil Smoak, who married Daisy Jones; Annie Lou Smoak, who married James W. Dukes; and Erma Lee Smoak, who married (1) Cecil Brickle and (2) John Renken and resides in Charleston.
Mr. Pearson engaged in farming his entire lifetime. He had a blacksmith shop on the farm where he made all of his farm tools.
Tall, scholarly, with a long and full white beard, he was the epitome of a gentleman of the Old South, who volunteered to defend his state from northern aggression when a mere lad. At the age of seventeen he was a member of the Confederate army, Company G., Second Regiment(Palmetto), South Carolina Volunteers. The company often held reunions at old Bethesda Church. With thirty-two other veterans he was in attendance at that church for the eleventh reunion in August 1909.
Mr. Pearson's death marked the end of an era. It was most appropriate that he was interred in the churchyard where he and his fellow veterans enjoyed getting together and reminising about the Confederate War.

Henry Franklin Pearson was the son of J. H. and Eliza Pearson.
