Anne Maria (Mary) Sather was born in Norway in March 1858 and married Adolph K. Eggen in 1882. They immigrated to the United States of America that same year. They traveled by train from the East coast to Minnesota where they unsuccessful in their attempt to farm.
Sometime between mid 1892 and early 1894, they moved by horse and wagon to South Dakota. They settled in the Sisseton Township in Roberts County.

In the the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Federal Census she is listed with her husband, Adolph K. Eggen. In the 1900 Census she is identified as having given birth to eleven children, all of whom were living and listed with the family. In the 1910 Census, she is listed as a mother of twelve children, eleven of whom are living. Only six of the eleven are enumerated with the family in the 1910 Census.
She is listed as a widow but the head of the family in the 1920 Census of Sisseton township. Her son, Morris, and his wife are enumerated with Mary Eggen in the 1920 Census of Sisseton Township. In the 1930 Census of Sisseton Township she is listed as the widow and "head" with her daughter, Jennie, son-in-law, Henry Eneboe, and their children.

The names of the children of Adolph and Mary Eggen are:
Olia, Emma, Christina, Carsten, Annie, Morris, Jennie, Gustof, Oscar, Peter, Esther, and Ruth.
