Carl Peter (Petrus) was the fifth son and tenth child of Adolph K. Eggen and Mary Sather Eggen. He never attended high school, but went to work on the family farm with his father and older brothers. In the mid-1930s, he took advantage of the winter school schedule and attended for two years. Classes he took included Agricultural Science, English, and Algebra.

He was married to Mabel Olberg in 1925 or 1926.

The date of his burial is May 2, 1983.
