FRIGHT CAUSE OF HER DEATH
MRS. MARGARET HALL PASSED AWAY EARLY THIS MORNING
HER HOME WAS AFIRE YESTERDAY
Shock Received by Aged Lady Then Believed to Have Resulted in Her Death - A Pioneer Here.
Mrs. Margaret Hall, the aged mother of J.B. Moore, the South Main street grocer, passed away very suddenly this morning at 6:30 o'clock at her home at 1004 South Main street. It is believed that a fright received yesterday morning, when at an early hour her home was found to be afire, was greatly responsible for her death, though she had been suffering from a general decline for some time past. She appeared to be in her usual state of health during the day, and last night, and the news of her death came as a great shock to the members of her family and her wide circle of friends this morning. The funeral service will be held Thursday morning from the Moore home on South Main street, adjoining the residence in which the deceased resided, at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. George Satterlee, and interment will be made in the Centerville Cemetery, near where Mrs. Hall settled when a young girl and where much of her life was spent.
Margaret Blair was born in Guernsey county, Ohio on October 12, 1843, and was 68 years of age at the time of her death. She resided in Guernsey county until 1860, when she came to Bourbon county with her siblings, locating at that time in the Centerville neighborhood, where they homesteaded a farm. Her residence has been in this county continuously since that time, ranking her as one of the oldest residents of this county.
Soon after coming to this county, she was united in marriage to Joe Moore, and to their union three children were born - Mrs. Effie Killion of Devon, Mrs. Cora Killion of Hiattville and J.B. Moore of this city. In 1870, Mr. Moore passed away, and a number of years later Mrs. Moore was united in marriage to Kelly Hall. To them was also born three children - Omer W. Hall, who now resides in Western Kansas, Judson J. Hall of near Devon, and Mrs. Bert Gordon of LaGrange, Ill (also Bertha Pearl Hall who died at age 10). All of her six children will be here to attend the funeral service.
Mrs. Hall continued to reside in the Centerville neighborhood until about thirteen years ago, when she moved to Fort Scott. She later returned there to reside for a year or more, but for a number of years had made her home in this city, residing near her son on South Main street. Her grandson, Victor Hall, who is employed by the American Express Company, has resided with her.
Yesterday morning at an early hour their home was found to be afire. Mrs. Hall, at her advanced age, was badly frightened, but seemed quieter during the day while at her son's home. She spent the evening there, and was requested to remain for the night, but declined, saying that she would rest better at her own home. She remained until near midnight, writing letters to her children, then retired, apparently feeling as usual. This morning Victor Hall arose as usual and was at the Moore home when he heard her call. Both he and Mr. Moore responded. They found her near the door, standing up. She complained that it was impossible for her to get her breath, and said that she believed she was dying. She was carried to the bed, where she expired a moment later. Dr. Roberts, who resides near, was hastily summoned, arriving before life was extinct.
It is believed that the scare and the fact that she breathed much smoke in the fire of yesterday were largely responsible for her death at this time.
