The burial will be in Rosedale cemetery. Mr. Phelps is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters, Fred M. Phelps, Dr. Carl E. Phelps, Mrs. Frank Simmons, and Miss Mabel Phelps.

Joseph Phelps married Adeline (Addie) E. Lessenger on 11 September 1873. He served as assessor, township clerk, trustee and justice of the peace while residing in Jackson Township, Henry County, Iowa. They had five children: Charles Rudolph, Fred, Cora S., Carl, and Maude. About the turn of the 20th century, the Phelps moved to Los Angeles, California.
