West Stockholm, July 29-S. Burton Strait, of Mannsville, son of the late Brooks and Carrie Simmons Strait of West Stockholm, died at Ideal Rest Hospital, Orwell, Oswego Co. on Monday July 20th. Mr. Strait had been Principal of Mannsville Union School the past three years and although afflicted with heart trouble kept up his schoolwork until examination time, when he grew worse.
Mr. Strait was born in West Stockholm December 25, 1883, the son of Brooks and Carrie Simmons Strait. He graduated from Potsdam Norma1 where he took the classical courses. He also attended Syracuse University and Chicago University.
Mr. Strait was a fine tenor singer, having studied music under Miss J. Ettie Crane. He was formerly soloist in the Methodist Church at North Tonawanda. He married Miss Lillian Rippon of Suffern on December 25, 1907, who, with one son Wendell, survives together with his mother and one sister, Miss Ada Strait of West Stockholm.
Mr. Strait always followed the profession of teaching, having been the principal of schools at Madrid, Moira New York Mills, Tupper Lake, North Tonawanda, Mannsville and Darlington, N. J., where for three years he was on the board of examiners.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday at 9 a. m., conducted by Rev. S. H. Stokes of Central Square and Rev. F. N. Churchill of Mannsville. Members of the board of education of the Mannsville Union School acted its bearers. The service here was at half past three at the home of his mother, Carrie Strait, Rev. S. H. Stokes officiating, assisted by Rev. R, K. Sheffield of Potsdam, Rev. Joseph. Lobb of St. Regis Falls a former pastor here, Rev. McLellan pastor in charge and Rev. Clara Clark of Henderson, a friend.
