Winthrop - Mrs. Carrie Strait, 84, passed away on September 13th at 9 o'clock at the home of her son in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. George A. Baker at Brasher Falls. Death came after a four-year illness. Mrs. Strait suffered a stroke Thanksgiving Day, in 1934, and had had several strokes since that time. She was about her home at times, but for the past year had been confined to bed. Her daughter, Mrs. Baker, was with her constantly during heir long illness.
Mrs. Strait was born at St. George, Chittenden Co., Vt., July 16, 1854, and was one of three children. She was 7 years old when her family moved to Stockholm. On Jan. 9, 1879, she was married to Brooks Strait and they lived at the Four Corners on the Potsdam Road. A son, Burton, who became a teacher, died in 1935. Since the death of her husband in 1924, Mrs. Strait had resided with her daughter and son in-law in Brasher Falls. Mrs. Strait joined the West Stockholm Methodist Church 59 years ago and was a teacher in the Sunday school and president of the Ladies Aid Society of the Church at one time. She sang in the choir for 40 years. Her sister, Mrs. Jessie Robertson died at West Stockholm May 29, 1937.
Surviving besides her daughter is a grandson, Wendell Strait of Norfolk, and a brother, Frank Simmons of West Stockholm. Burial will be in the family plot in West Stockholm.
