William was the son of Wilson Davis Calfee and Jane Peery Bailey. He married Eliza (or Lyda) Zug Whipple, and they were the parents of Robert George, Carlin Edward, Charles Henry, French, Douglas Whipple, Leona Margaret, George Courtland, Harry (or Henry?), and Jeanette P.

William served in CO D, 11th Battion Reserves during the Civil War. He worked in the silver mines in Sherman, Hinsdale Co., Co in 1880. By 1887, he was a surveyor and was employed as same in Brooklyn, NY, as he appeared in the 1900 census. His death certificate states that his occupation was "gardner."
