James Collings Sr. was born at Sunderland, Durham, England, 29th of May 1812. He was the son of John Collings and Elizabeth Robinson.His father was shipwrecked with two other sailors and lived on an island for five years. His older brother was lost at sea.
At the age of twelve he was apprenticed to a friend of his father's at the shipyards. At the age of 21 he was considered a master carpenter and helped in building ships.
While working at the ship yards he met and married Elizabeth Bewick, daughter of John Bewick and Catherine Stephensen. To this union eight children were born.Seven of them were born in England. Three sons died in infancy.
In 1840 he heard the gospel from Elders who left tracts at the dockyards.He was baptized. Both his wife and mother were angry with him. He endured this for five years and then his wife joined the church. His mother never forgave him and never spoke to him again. He soon went to America.
James was a man of great faith and integrity. All his spare time was used for the church.
After James wife joined the church their home was open to the Elders at all time.
Their desire to come to Zion grew each year. It was decided for James to come to America and work in the ship yards to obtain money to bring the family. On arriving in America James went to work at Brooklyn.
By 1854 money had been saved to send for his family to come to America.
Three children, James Jr., Catherine and Deseret came with their mother. Elizabeth, the oldest daughter stayed in England another year.
The family lived in Brooklyn one year then moved to Tom's River, New Jersey where their youngest son Mahonri was born. Two years later the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri. The next year they moved to Winter Quarters, where James worked hard to get a wagon, oxen and supplies to head west.
In the spring of 1860 the journey across the plains began.They were members of the Jesse Murphy Company. After three months they arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. Two years later they moved to Logan, Utah. Then to Cache Valley where they living in a tent for four years.
Bear Lake Valley was being settled and the family was called to go there. They moved to Paris, Idaho in 1866.
James and Elizabeth were always kind and helpful to those in need. He was always busy and energetic, yet he found time to help and cheer his friends and neighbors.
He lived to be almost 99 years old. He passed away to the great beyond October 10, 1910. (Find A Grave contributor julrene thornberg)


Elizabeth Bewick Collings and James Collings had 8 children. The children that came to America all were buried in the same Paris, Idaho Cemetery.
John Collings (1835-1836), John Collings (1839-1845) and William John Robert Mills Collings (1849-1851) died in England before the family migrated.(Find a Grave contributor Tamara Larsen)
