Walter was the son of Hart Massey and his wife Eliza Ann Phelps Massey. He married Susan Maria "Susie" Denton on 11 July 1888 in Worthen Street Methodist Episcopal Church, Lowell, Middlesex, Massachusetts by Reverend Willard Taylor Perrin (Susan's brother-in-law). They had four known children, Ruth Lillian, Madeline, Dorothy and Denton.
