DILLON HERALD
Dillon, Dillon Co., SC
Thursday, 26 October 1911
Great was the gloom cast over our neighborhood Thursday night when the news was spread that Mrs. D.J. Alford was dead.
Although being in declining hearth for more than a year the end came almost as a thunder bolt from a clear sky. Since her return from the hospital, about three months ago she was so bright and cheerful, even able to make short visits in the neighborhood, we hoped that she would be spared several years yet, but God willed it not so, and Thursday night, though not as well as common, she was talking with her loved ones around her bed about eight o'clock, slept for a few minutes, awoke and in a short while apparently fell asleep again and then passed into the great beyond....
She was a woman of strong personal character, one of God's noble women nobly planned. Since being an invalid she was a greater power for good than many in full possession of their faculties. Wherever there was need within her reach she was there in spirit if not in person. Many there are that will bless her memory for words and deeds.
She leaves to mourn their loss a husband and eight children. Mrs. Sion Alford of Rowland; Mrs. Gus Alford, of Dillon; Mrs. Laurin McInnis, of Carolina; Messrs. Knox and Grady and Misses Emily, Jessie and Lizzie, at home; three grandchildren, several brothers and sisters....
