Charles was married to Olive Euretta R. Smith. Euretta was born on 4 April 1835 in New York, daughter of James Smith.
Charles enlisted on 12 April 1863 as a Private at Cicero, New York in Company K of the 2nd New York Heavy Artillery. He then enlisted for three years as a Private in Company L of the 9th New York Heavy Artillery on 4 December 1863, receiving a $300 bonus. He was mustered in on 24 December 1863. At the time he was a resident of Cicero, Onondaga County, New York. He was present at the surrender of General Robert E. Lee. He was discharged on 29 September 1865 in Washington, DC.
On 20 August 1870, Charles and Ureta lived in Traverse City with three children- Josephine, George, and Olive. He was a farm laborer, she was keeping house, and all three children were attending school. They owned $200 in real estate and $150 in personal property.
Charles applied for a Civil War invalids pension on 7 May 1887.
In June 1880, Charles and Olive, their children Irvine and Rosa, and several boarders lived in Traverse City. He was working as a handy man while she was keeping house.
Charles lived in Traverse City in 1890 and he complained that he suffered from chronic diarrhea as a result of his Civil War service.
On 1 June 1900, Charles and Olive were living at 641 E. 8th Street in Traverse City. He was now a retired farmer.
Charles died on 30 September 1903 at 841 E. 8th Street from mitral insufficiency of the heart. Euretta applied for a Civil War widow's pension on 8 October 1903.
Euretta died on 26 February 1913 in Grand Traverse County from chronic brights disease and senility.
Charles and Euretta were buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
