Edward Vernard Anderson, 87, of Coon Rapids, Minn., passed away March 13, 2011, at home. He was born April 14, 1923, in DeKalb, Ill. to Vern Jacob Anderson and Mary Elizabeth Twomey.
He graduated from high school in DeKalb, and then served his country during World War II as a B24 bomber pilot with the 448th Bomb Group, US Army Air Corp. After being honorably discharged, Ed completed a bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois where he met and married Lucy Cleveland Johns on September 27, 1947.
Ed worked at Western Cartridge, Alton, Ill., Thor Tools, Aurora, Ill., and Westinghouse, Pittsburgh, Pa. where he also earned a masters degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He relocated the family to Woodland Hills, Calif. where he worked at Rocketdyne. He retired 1983 from Atomics International, Chatsworth, Calif.
Ed enjoyed traveling with Lucy in their motorhome, covering 49 states. They also explored Europe, the Middle East and Hawaii. They attended the 50th anniversary of D-Day in France. Ed was active in his church and service organizations. He especially enjoyed tutoring students at Washington-Kosciusko grade school in Winona, Minn.
Ed is survived by five children, David E. (Mary) Anderson of Glendale, Calif.; Howard D. (Wendy) Anderson of Glendale, Calif.; Carol B. (Allen) Toris of Omaha, Neb.; Joyce A. (Gene) Hodel of Oak Grove, Minn.; Timothy R. (Randee) Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and five grandchildren, Eric (Debbie) Hodel of Blaine, Minn., Corey and Cassie Anderson of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Lora and Matt Anderson of Glendale, Calif.
His wife, Lucy, preceded him in death.
Upon his death, his body was donated to the University of Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 27 at Coon Rapids United Methodist Church, 10506 Hanson Blvd. Northwest, Coon Rapids, Minn. with visitation an hour prior. His ashes will be interred at a family plot in Delavan, Ill. July, 2012. Memorials can be donated to the American Cancer Society.
