Alonzo W. Brown

Alonzo W. Brown, one of the prominent and most progressive citizens of the town of Plainfield, died at his home on Hackley street in that town December 3rd, after a short illness with bronchial pneumonia.

Mr. Brown was the son of the late William and Angeline Wood Brown and was born August 20, 1844, and had always resided on Hackley street. Mr. Brown was twice married. In November, 1873, he was united in marriage to Ella Perkins of Unadilla Forks. To them were born two sons, Walter M. and Claude E. She died in August, 1881, and March 22, 1886, he was again united in marriage to Lizzie Dorland of Bridgewater, and to them was born one son, William D.

Mr. Brown had been a member of the Unadilla Forks Baptist church having united with the church in 1878, and had been one of the trustees for many years In 1899 he was elected to the office of deacon of the church, which office he held until his death. In politics Mr. Brown was a life-long Republican and for several years represented the town of Plainfield on the board of Supervisors and for two years was chairman of the board. He was one of the leading breeders of Holstein cattle of New York state and for over forty years was a member of the Holstein-Friesian Association. He also was vice president and director of the New York State Holstein Club. Mr. Brown was very active in Farm Bureau work and was the first president of Otsego County Farm Bureau association.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife and three sons mentioned, one brother, William H. Brown of Bridgewater and four grandchildren.

He will be greatly missed by the church and community which extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. Funeral services were held at his late home, Saturday afternoon at two o'clock and were conducted by his pastor, the Rev. George O. Read, assisted by Dr. Woodard of Edmeston. Friends and relatives were present from Syracuse, Cooperstown, Milford, White Plains, Utica, Green and the surrounding towns of this community.
