Matthew enlisted for Civil War service as private in Company G, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 13, 1862, at Cleveland, Ohio(Cuyahoga County) for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Moulder. He was mustered out with Company G, June 12, 1865, at Raleigh, North Carolina at the end of his term of service. His name is on Panel #14 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. See: www.soldiersandsailors.com.

Wife: Elizabeth Bash, born April 7, 1842, in Cleveland, OH Died May 25, 1938. She and Matthew moved to Cincinnati from Cleveland to live near their married Daughter, Mary L. Hoppensack. Elizabeth is buried with Matthew in a large extended family plot. They lived in the Price Hill neighborhood.
