Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gates of Girard, died early Saturday, October 26, 1996 at her home. Her death was unexpected.

She was born December 25, 1912 at Lowell, Kansas to Charles and Pearl (Weakley) Karr. She grew up in Lowell and attended Lowell Schools.

She married Henry S Gates on July 20, 1930 at Galena, The couple moved to Oswego, where they farmed until moving to a farm souteast of Girard in 1945. In 1968, The couple moved to the home in Girard, where Mrs. Gates resided at the time of her death. Mr. Gates preceded her in death December 7, 1968.

After moving to Girard, Mrs. Gates began working at the Girard High School as a kitchen worker, She retired at the age of 65.

Survivors include a son, Charles Gates, Four Daughters, Mary Ann Vogts, Allie Mae Chiartano, Florine Wills and Kathy Gates, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchild, two great great grandchildren, a brother Marion Karr, and a sister Josie Hendryx, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, an aunt a sister in law and Arabella Gates that was raised in the Karr home.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William Karr, a sister Margaret Sliger, a son in law Don Wills and a grandson Robert Gates

Services held at 10:30 am Tuesday October 29, 1996 at the Smith Carson Wall Funeral Home with Pastor Elder Meyer officiating. Burial following at the Pittsburg Garden of Memories Cemetery, North of Pittsburg.
