Maurice "Moose" W. Berner, 86, Green Bay, died unexpectedly, Thursday, July 14, 2011, at a local hospital. He was born Feb. 11, 1925, in Spokane, Wash., to Harry and Grace (Suiter) Berner. He graduated from Central Valley High School in Spokane, Wash., and was the first to earn 12 letters in football, baseball and track. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater on Palau Island and was discharged in 1946. On Dec. 27, 1948 he married Lois Cartier in Green Bay.
Moose was an accomplished baseball pitcher and had pitched for the Cleveland Indians farm system and pitched for the Green Bay Blue Jays. For 40 years, Moose worked as a lineman for Wisconsin Public Service, retiring in 1987.
Moose and Lois were avid UWGB basketball fans and for many years held tickets for both men's and women's teams.
Survivors include his wife, Lois; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Dave Baldauf, Burnsville, Minn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Suzanne Berner, Stillwater, Minn.; three grandsons, Michael (Michelle) Berner, Gregory (Tarin) Baldauf, Matthew Berner; two great-grandchildren, Emma and Jack Berner; nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 341 Wilson Ave., from 10 a.m. to noon Monday. The Funeral Service will be held at noon Monday at the church with the Rev. Diane Rew officiating. Entombment will be in the Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum.
