Eldorado IL. newspaper March 07, 1918. It read---MRS. JOE DAVIS passed away last Friday night at her home northwest of town. Mrs. Davis was, before her marriage, MISS LELA ROBERTS, and is survived by the husband, and one babe just a few days old, and a number of relatives and friends who are deeply grieved to learn of her death. The baby was William J. Davis, (known as Hank) and raised by Lela's parents.
Joe married Veda Leona Smith on January 08,1921, in Saline Co., IL.Their children were;

Paul Junior b. July 19, 1921
Eugene Davis b. December 15,1923
Glendell Lee Davis b. January 27 ,1925
Calleen Davis b. September 3, 1927
Nicky Bob Davis b.August 07 , 1932
James Davis b. July 3 ,1934
Jackie Davis b. November 28, 1943

During WWII while Glendell Lee was away at war his wife left their baby Glendell Eugene alone and Joe and Leone adopted him and cared for him until Glendell returned home.
Joe died of a massive heart attack when he lifted a heavy basket of laundry. He was seventy six years old.
Joe was a farmer near Eldorado IL. untill the big flood in the early 1930's when they moved to Mt Vernon and he went to work for Nelson Concrete and worked there until he retired in the 1960's. Times were hard in the early 1900's and because he worked at a cement plant when a family member passed away he would make their headstone which was a square piece of concrete with their name and date of birth and death on it. As times got better and it was affordable the headstones were replaced with professional made headstones. The only headstone not replaced is the Marcine Lloyd Smith headstone. It is still in Sursa Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois.
