James A. Bender age 94, of Monticello, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 Saturday morning, September 3, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church, Monticello with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. Rev. Al Polito will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 8 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello where a Masonic service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thoughts, Memories and Condolences may be left at www.goettschonline.com. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Camp Courageous. Surviving is his wife, Leona, a son James D. (Janaan) Bender, Sun City, Arizona, 3 grandsons, Michael (Margaret) Aldrich, James L. Bender, Timothy (Laura) Aldrich, 3 great-Grandchildren, a step-daughter, Betty Lou Wurster, Springville, and step-granddaughter, Laurie Wurster, 1 brother, Ralph (Helen) Bender, Tustin, California, 2 sisters, Jean Melton, Independence, Missouri, Kay Clark, Monticello, a sister-in-law, Naomi Bender, Monticello, 2 brother-in-laws, Russell Heerts, Parkersburg, Chaeney Burris, Davenport and many nieces and nephews . He was preceded in death by his Parents, his first wife, Bette, his daughter and son-in-law, Janalee and Kenneth Aldrich, a grandson, Dan Aldrich, 2 brothers, Charles and Paul, and 4 sisters, Mary Holscher, Ruth Burris, Fern Fry, Esther Heerts. James A. Bender was born March 11, 1911 at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was the son of James C. and Edith Schneider, Bender. Jim received his education in the Monticello Community Schools graduating with the class of 1930. He attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids on a football scholarship. James A. Bender and Bette Brandt were married July 21, 1934 at the United Methodist Church, Anamosa, Iowa. The couple lived in Waverly and Cedar Falls and Jim was employed at John Deere Tractor Works. He learned to be a tool and die maker at John Deere. The couple returned to Monticello in 1947 and Jim and his brother Paul bought the Monticello Machine Shop. In 1968 Jim sold the business to Charles Clark. Jim then started a home improvement business and was a school bus driver. Bette died September 22, 1981. James A. Bender and Leona Rieniets Brandt were married March 8, 1983 at Resurrection Lutheran Church, in Scottsdale, Arizona. The couple spent their summers in Iowa and wintered in Arizona. Jim was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He had been a member of the Lions Club and the Monticello Fire Department. Jim loved Hawkeye Football and was a season ticket holder for many years. He also enjoyed golf and bowling.
