MOOREFIELD,WEST VIRGINIA -- Virgil Garrett Thorne, age 92, of Moorefield, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at the Grant County Nursing Home.
He was born Jan. 2, 1918, in Rough Run, and was a son of the late Solomon Thorne and Mary Jane (Mongold) Thorne.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Elizabeth (Ours) Thorne on Sept. 6, 1994; two sisters, Mernie Ours and infant Bettie Catherine Thorne; seven brothers, Oscar, Jesse, Curry "Doc," Luke, Vernon, William and Evers Thorne. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Virgil was a logger and farmer and retired from the West Virginia Department of Highways. He was a member of the Moorefield Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are two sons, Paul L. Thorne of Dorcas, and Willis V. Thorne of Durgon; five daughters, Shirelene V. Alt of Petersburg, Maxine R. Halterman of Moorefield, Lucy M. Crites of Moorefield, Imogene E. Miller of Petersburg, and Wilma K. Judy of Durgon; 18 grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; 43 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandson.
Family will receive friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Schaeffer Funeral Home with Pastor Brad Taylor, Pastors Russell and Lucy Webster and the Rev. Harold Cullers officiating.
Interment will be in Brake Cemetery, Dorcas.
