Aaron D. "Doc" Ullom, 20, of Midland, Michigan, was killed in action July 12, 2011 while serving with the United States Navy in Afghanistan. He was born June 25, 1991 in South Lyon, Michigan. Aaron was a 2009 graduate of Midland High School, where he played football and was on the track team. He worked at Genji's Japanese Steakhouse. He enlisted with the United States Navy and since October of 2009 he has honorably served as a Navy Hospital Corpsman with Lima Company.

Funeral Services: Friday, July 22, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at Midland Evangelical Free Church, 7221 North Jefferson Avenue, with Rev. Daniel Kempin and Rev. Matthew Makela of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating.

Graveside Burial Rites: Midland Cemetery. Military honors presented by the United States Navy and the Midland Area Veterans. Funeral procession from the church to the cemetery after services at the church: follow south on Jefferson, west on Wackerly, south on Eastman, west on Sugnet, and south on Orchard to the cemetery.

7/15/2011 - Dignified Transfer ~ A U.S. Navy carry team transfers the remains of Navy Seaman Aaron D. Ullom, of Midland, Mich., at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, July 14, 2011. Ullom was assigned as a hospitalman to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

July 20, 2011 - Flags lowered Friday for Seaman Aaron Ullom of Midland

Lansing, Michigan. By order of Gov. Rick Snyder, U.S. flags on all campuses of Western Michigan University and throughout Michigan will be lowered Friday, July 22, 2011 in honor of Navy Seaman Aaron D. Ullom, of Midland, Michigan, who died July 12, 2011 in Afghanistan's Helmand province.

Ullom, age 20, served as a hospital corpsman for the Navy and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

He deployed to Afghanistan in February for his first tour of duty. Ullom's awards include National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and NATO Medal—International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan.

Former Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm issued a proclamation in 2003, requiring U.S. flags to be lowered to half-staff throughout Michigan and on Michigan waters to honor Michigan servicemen and servicewomen killed in the line of duty. Michigan was among the first states to honor its fallen sons and daughters by lowering flags.
